PhD Position in Ukrainian Studies (m/w/d)

75 % (starting day 02.02.2026)

Your tasks

  • The PhD candidate will conduct independent research in Ukrainian studies, based on the academic disciplines cultural history, history, literary studies, or sociology.
  • As a member of our international research team, the PhD candidate will actively participate in collaborative projects, workshops, and conferences, and will be expected to engage in scholarly exchange across disciplines and national boundaries.
  • Additional tasks include presenting research findings to both academic and non-academic audiences, contributing to joint publications, and supporting the overall intellectual environment of the Department.

Your profile

We are looking for a PhD candidate with expertise in cultural history, history, literary studies, or sociology. Interdisciplinary approaches and comparative aspects in a European or global context are welcome. The PhD project should propose a research question that engages critically with debates in the candidate's discipline while contributing to the broader field of Eastern European Studies.

 Required Qualifications
  • Excellent academic record (M.A. in a relevant discipline with a minimum 5.0 Swiss Grading System)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the Ph.D. Programme in Organization Studies and Cultural Theory at the University of St.Gallen. The Department of Eastern European Studies at the University of St. Gallen focuses on the analysis of contemporary developments in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Black Sea region. Its research and teaching address the profound political, cultural, and social transformations currently taking place in these areas, including the effects of full-scale war.
