Postdoctoral Researcher in Latin American Studies (m/w/d)

60 % (starting 01.09.2024 or by mutual agreement; limited to 2 years)

Your tasks

The successful candidate will:
  • perform research in the area of illegal or informal economies with a focus on Latin America. Research may address legality/illegality interfaces, i.e., linkages between illegal markets and governments, state agencies, or businesses (including social platforms and fintech offering digital payment services). Examples of illegal markets that may be the subject of research include wildlife, illicit drugs, human trafficking, and trafficking in cultural/archaeological artifacts, body parts, child sexual exploitation material, etc.  
  • submit papers to peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • engage in collaborations in an interdisciplinary environment (sociology, political science, international law, anthropology).
  • apply for external research funding (e.g., SNSF, private foundations, etc.). 
  • assist with various tasks related to the chair and the Latin American studies in Switzerland. You will be involved in the administration of the Swiss Society of Americanists, the Swiss School of Latin American Studies, and the Centro Latinoamericano-Suizo. 
  • work in their office on a daily basis. 

Your profile

  • Ph.D. degree in sociology, political science, anthropology, development studies, or a related discipline.
  • documented knowledge of the Latin American region.
  • strong interest in academic research and proficiency in qualitative and (to a lesser degree) quantitative research methods.
  • experience conducting and managing research projects in the Latin American region is an advantage.
  • track record of international publications, third-party funding, and participation in academic bodies.
  • ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in an interdisciplinary and international research team
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. German and/or Spanish language skills are an advantage
The successful candidate will collaborate with Matías Dewey. The position, based at the Centro Latinoamericano-Suizo and associated with the Professorship of Latin American Studies, offers a unique opportunity for career advancement. The candidate will have opportunities to further their own research agenda and academic qualification, collaborate with scholars associated with the Centro Latinoamericano-Suizo and the Research Institute of Sociology (e.g., joint publications, teaching), develop a strong academic network and is expected to co-apply for (additional) external funding. Funds may be available for conferences.
