Postdoctoral Researcher in Social Sciences, Horizon Europe Project (4 years) (m/f/d)

50-70 % (starting 01.12.2024 or by mutual agreement; limited to 4 years)

Your tasks

The successful candidate will
  • work on a new Horizon Europe Project (Research and Innovation Action) which seeks to contribute to a sustainable and resilient agroforestry system across Africa. The project will generate evidence for management of agroforestry systems via (i) stakeholder engagement and agroforestry profiling, (ii) creating user-friendly databases for optimal plant and animal selection, (iii) impact assessment of agroforestry systems and practices on ecosystem services and human health, (iv) agroforestry digital tools, crowdsourcing app, and collaboration platform, (v) demonstration sites as agroforestry lighthouses, raising awareness and carbon farming businesses, and (vi) training activities, sustainability plan and supporting AU-EU cooperation.
  • conduct socio-economic assessments of agroforestry systems and evaluate the societal co-benefits of agroforestry systems and eco-friendly practices linked with economic impacts. 
  • contribute to assessing existing inequalities in agroforestry decision-making and raising regional awareness to shift stakeholder perspectives on agroforestry and mitigate gender inequalities.
  • co-create user-oriented training activities and design awareness raising activities for a climate neutral African Union. 
  • submit papers to peer-reviewed journals and present at international scientific conferences and project meetings (e.g., in Africa). 
  • apply for external research funding (e.g., SNSF, Horizon Europe, private foundations/enterprises). 
  • engage in collaborations in an interdisciplinary environment. 
  • assist with research, organisational and administrative tasks and activities as needed.
  • mainly work in their office on a daily basis.

Your profile

  • Ph.D. degree in Sociology, Anthropology, African studies and/or Education
  • Knowledge of and experience in the African region are an asset.
  • Strong interest in academic research and proficiency in quantitative and (to a lesser degree) qualitative research methods.  
  • Experience conducting and managing research projects (in the African region).
  • Track record of international publications, third-party funding and engagement in academic bodies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; German language skills are an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in an interdisciplinary and international research team.
  • Motivated by personal and team accomplishments, flexible, efficient, reliable.

Position is subject to finale project approval.
The successful candidate will collaborate with Sabine Hoidn (project leader) and her research team in EU cutting-edge research projects. The position is based at the Research Institute of Sociology (SfS) and associated with the Chair of Sociology. We offer an interesting and challenging position in a stimulating and supportive environment with a vibrant team of researchers and excellent working conditions. The candidate will have opportunities to further their own research agenda and academic career, collaborate with other members of the SfS research group (e.g., joint publications, teaching), develop a strong academic network and is expected to (co-) apply for (additional) external funding. Funding for scientific conferences, additional training and research activities may be provided.
